Nasal congestion / obstructive sleep apnea - chicago pediatric allergist
Allergies, nasal congestion, and airway obstruction can affect the sleep of up to 10% of children. Symptoms that suggest allergies or nasal congestion may be affecting your child’s sleep include:
- Frequent snoring and mouth breathing
- Sleep walking or night terrors
- Daytime fatigue
- Hyperactive behavior
- Poor school performance
- Moodiness, anxiety, or depression
- Restlessness and sweating during sleep
Enlarged tonsils / adenoids
Sometimes pediatric nasal congestion and snoring can be associated with a condition called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, unlike adults, the symptoms in children may be very subtle. Children do not always stop breathing completely and snoring may be very mild. OSA in children is usually due to enlarged tonsils / adenoids and swollen nasal passages. Treatment usually consists of surgical removal of the adenoids and tonsils and diagnosing and treating allergies if present.
The impact of OSA on a child’s development and overall quality of life can often be dramatic. Dr. Rotskoff has a unique expertise in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of pediatric allergies, snoring, and OSA.
